Heads Up

We know that life can be challenging and sometimes those challenges can seem relentless. You might feel that you are all on your own with your problems, or you might feel like you are in a rut and not able to cope for much longer, or only cope by doing the things that don’t actually help – like eating more, or drinking more, or maybe hiding away from people.

The good news is that you are not on your own and help is available - here at Health All Round - and If we can’t help with your particular issues, we can tell you about other good quality services available in Edinburgh (and there are lots of them!)

We will help you to decide the best way forward when you come in and register for our Heads Up service.

Who can benefit?

Anyone experiencing issues such as:

Low mood/ Depression

Anxiety & Panic

Insomnia

Anger & irritability

Difficulty maintaining relationships

Problems at work due to stress

Examples of services:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT):

Sometimes we have a tendency to think in ways that are not actually helpful to us. This can be particularly problematic if we have been going through a tough time in our lives. Sometimes we start to feel that we have no control over what happens to us and there is nothing we can do to make life better. CBT can help you to address these unhelpful thinking styles and take a more hopeful and positive approach to managing life.

At Health All Round you may be offered CBT via a group or one to one, depending on availability and your particular needs.

CBT Groups include:

Anxiety Management – A six week course to: Improve your understanding of the physiological symptoms of anxiety; Develop effective coping strategies (breathing & relaxation); Manage panic ; Overcome avoidance & build tolerance.

Overcoming Low Mood & Depression – An eight week course to help you identify unhelpful thoughts that bring you down, prevent you from doing the things you want to do in life and limit your ability to cope with problems and issues.

The course aims to: Help you develop a more balanced way of thinking; Manage difficult times and challenging life events; Reduce your risk of social isolation, depression and ill health; Help you lead a happier, more active and fulfilling life.

Courses run alternatively throughout the year and we generally advise that you attend both courses. We understand that the idea of groups like this can be daunting, especially if you are already feeling very anxious. However many people have benefitted from our courses over the years, and participants often say that they found it really helpful meeting others with similar problems to themselves - they feel less isolated and relieved by the fact that they are not the only ones struggling to keep going and keep their heads up!

All of our groups are run in comfortable, spacious rooms with a quiet café area that people can retreat to whenever they like and there is no pressure to speak or share unless you are comfortable with the idea of doing that.

Counselling:

A one to one service to help you identify problematic issues and recognise your strengths and resources. This may include reflection on past events and your counsellor will support you through this process without judging you or telling you what you should or shouldn’t do.

Counselling can help you to:

Identify problematic issues

Deal with difficult feelings and develop strategies to reduce risk

Identify and develop effective coping skills for everyday life

Manage relationships with others

Understand and accept yourself as you are

Develop self – compassion

Move forward and do the things you want to do in life

Hypnotherapy:

Research suggests that there is a powerful connection between the body and mind, and hypnotherapy can allow you to capitalise on this bond to address the symptoms of a number of health concerns. Hypnotherapy has been shown to be a highly beneficial alternative pain management intervention for back pain, headaches and other types of chronic pain, and its stress relief benefits can reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and other medical conditions.

Hypnotherapy can also help you give up bad habits or adopt new habits that will help you to lead a healthier life, to tackle minor phobia’s , improve sleep and combat insomnia.

I have stopped smoking now, for almost a full year, and I don’t feel the desire to smoke again.. I was a heavy smoker for fifteen years. Now I feel like a non-smoker.”

How do I access these services?

To access any Heads Up service you must come in to Health All Round at 24 Westfield Avenue and register with us. You will be seen one to one and we will talk over your personal issues and ask you to complete a short questionnaire to help us assess your mental wellbeing. It usually takes about half an hour to register. You can come in at any of the following times:

  • Monday 2pm – 4pm

  • Wednesday 10am – 2pm

  • Thursday 12 -2pm

(Evening appointments can be arranged if you wish to access evening services)

How much does it cost?

There is no cost for the Heads Up groups but donations are appreciated.
One to one therapies are free for anyone in receipt of benefits.
If you are working the prices are as follows:

CBT & Counselling:
Day time appointments £10 per session (10am – 5pm)
Evening appointments £25 per session (6pm & 7.15pm)

Hypnotherapy:
£25 per session (concessions available)
